    Overall, this is a good product. It functions as it is suppose to. I sometimes use it as a radio for work since I am not allowed to listen to anything using my computer. However, if you don’t want to crank it every 10 mintues, I suggest getting a radio that plugs into the wall. The cell phone charging function is kind of annoying since it takes over 10 minutes of cranking to receive a minute of talk time. I guess that is better than nothing during an actual emergency if you happen to end up with no cell phone charge. All of my coworkers and friends are impressed with this crank radio and often ask me where I bought it. It is a nice conversation piece during a non-emergency! I recommend buying this device or something similar to prepare yourself for a possible emergency.

    Good is sound—- Its attractive—but battery doesn’t hold nearly enough power. I wouldn’t trust it in an emergency. I could American Red Cross FR150 Microlink Solar-Powered, Self-Powered AM/FM/Weatherband Portable Radio with Flashlight and Cell Phone Charger (Red)crank, crank,crank. But wanted to rely on solar power like my old cracked one—–No. Going to try to get a refund.

    As a disaster relief volunteer, I recommend this to be your first purchase.

    Think about most disasters! Power is the first thing you’ll lose. Then you’ll be scramblng for flashlights and batteries. The FR160R is the first thing you should grab. It’s small and fits easily in a bedside drawer. First, it’s a decent flashlight. Second, it has a handcrank to recharge it . . . that will be of utmost importance over the next few days. That also means it can charge other stuff . . . like a cell phone . . . the second most important piece of equipment you should have. Lastly, it’s a radio. The reception isn’t great and that’s because reception takes power and power must be conserved.

    Comments: Buy a camera case to put it in. Make sure it has a belt loop. You will want to have this unit with you at all times during an emergency. Next, check your cell phone to make sure you have the wiring to charge it from the FR160R’s USB port. It would have been nice to have a cigarette lighter port, since we all have car adapters for our phones, but the unit would have to be bigger for that to happen.

    The FR160R has a solar panel which requires you to leave it unattended in the sun all day. Never put this unit down for a minute. This unit will be the most popular device in your crowd and will disappear in nanoseconds.

    It also has an earphone port, but earphones are not included, and I question that earphones would improve the sound quality.

    Overall, a good unit!

    I bought 3 of these to give as christmas presents. Everything worked well on them and the flashlight lasted a surprisingly long time after a minute or two of turning the crank.

    The FR-160 is a small radio/light package and is fairly well made. The flashlight is the best feature with a focused beam with no light streaks. The radio requires a strong station and with that constraint the audio is reasonably good but the volume is not great. The biggest problem with the radio is how difficult it is to tune on AM/FM. The weather band is tuned with a sliding switch and it too requires a strong station.

    With all its shortcomings I will buy more and strategically locate them on my property as the cost is low enough to do that.
